भूकंप का भवनों पर क्या प्रभाव पड़ता है ?

भूकंप के कारण धरातल में भूकंपीय तरंगें उत्पन्न होती हैं। फलस्वरूप धरातल पर स्थित भवन गति में आ जाते हैं। इनकी गति इसकी निर्माण सामग्री पर निर्भर करती है। भवन का निचला भाग पृथ्वी के साथ एक ही रेखा में आगे-पीछे होने लगता है। परंतु भवन का ऊपरी भाग विश्राम अवस्था में रहता है। धीरे-धीरे ऊपरी भाग भी भवन के निचले भाग के साथ चिपका रहने का प्रयास करता है। परिणाम यह होता है कि भवन का ढांचा अस्त-व्यस्त हो जाता है और अंततः: भवन ध्वस्त हो जांता है। ऊँचे भवन नीचे भवनों की अपेक्षा जल्दी क्षतिग्रस्त होते हैं।

The lower part of the building starts moving back and forth in the same line as the earth. But the upper part of the building remains at rest. Gradually the upper part also tries to stick with the lower part of the building. The result is that the structure of the building becomes disorganized and eventually the building collapses. High buildings are damaged more quickly than buildings below.
