असहयोग आंदोलन अहिंसा पर आधारित था। परिणामस्वरूप शीघ्र ही यह आंदोलन बल पकड़ गया। विद्यार्थियों ने सरकारी विद्यालयों का बहिष्कार कर दिया। जनता ने बीच चौराहों पर विदेशी वस्त्रों की होली जलाई। ये सभी गतिविधियाँ शांतिपूर्ण थीं, दुर्भाग्यवश उत्तर प्रदेश के चौरी-चौरा नामक स्थान पर बाज़ार से गुज़र रहा शांतिपूर्ण जुलूस पुलिस के साथ हिंसक टकराव में बदल गया और भीड़ ने पुलिस थाने को आग लगा दी। इस हिंसात्मक घटना से दुःखी होकर 12 फरवरी, 1922 को गाँधी जी ने असहयोग आंदोलन वापिस ले लिया।

All these activities were peaceful, unfortunately, A peaceful procession passing through a market place in Uttar Pradesh's Chauri-Chaura turned into a violent confrontation with the police and the mob torched the police station. Saddened by this violent incident, Gandhi ji withdrew the non-cooperation movement on February 12, 1922.
