पहले विश्व युद्ध ने भारत में  आंदोलन के विकास में किस प्रकार योगदान दिया ? 

उत्तर 

पहला विश्व युद्ध जहाँ मानवता के लिए विनाश का कारण बना वंही इसके कारण राष्ट्रवाद को भी बल मिला। भारत में राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन के विकास में प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के योगदान का वर्णन इस प्रकार है--

1. करों में वृद्धि -- पहले विश्व युद्घ के कारण एकाएक रक्षा व्यय बढ़ गया। इस खर्च को पूरा करने के लिए सरकार ने करों में वृद्धि कर दी। इसके अतिरिक्त सीमा शुल्क को भी बढ़ा दिया गया। आयकर के रूप में नया कर भी लगा दिया गया। इससे जनता में रोष फैल गया जिसने राष्ट्रवाद को जन्म दिया।

2. कीमतों में वृद्धि -- पहले विश्व युद्ध के दौरान खाद्य पदार्थों का भारी अभाव हो गया। फलस्वरूप कीमतें लगभग दुगनी हो गईं। आम आदमी का जीवन कष्टमय हो गया। अत: लोग विदेशी शासन से मुक्ति के बारें में सोचने लगे। यह सोच राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन का आधार बनी।

3. सिपाहियों की जबरन भर्ती -- पहले विश्व युद्ध में अत्यधिक सैरिकों के मरने के कारण सरकार को अधिक-से-अधिक सैनिकों की आवश्यकता थी। अत: गांवों से नौजवानों को ज़बरदस्ती सेना में भर्ती किया गया। इससे ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में सरकार के प्रति विशेष रोष था।

4. भारतीय उदयोगपतियों में रोष -- भारत में अब विदेशी पूंजी बड़े पैमाने पर लगाई जाने लगी। भारतीय उद्योगपति चाहते थे कि सरकार आयातों पर भारी कस्टम ड्यूटी लगाए तथा उन्हें सुविधाएं देकर भारतीय उद्योगों को सुरक्षा प्रदान करे। अब उन्हें भी आभास होने लगा कि केवल एक दृढ राष्ट्रवादी आंदोलन तथा एक स्वाधीन भारतीय सरकार के द्वारा ही सुरक्षा के लक्ष्य प्राप्त किए जा सकते हैं।

5. मज़दूरों तथा दस्तकारों में रोष -- बेरोज़गारी तथा महंगाई से पीड़ित मज़दूर तथा दस्तकार भी राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन में सक्रिय हो उठे। उनके लिए निर्वाह करना भी कठिन था। वे सोचने लगे कि यदि भूखा ही मरना है तो स्वदेशी सरकार की छाया में ही क्यों न मरा जाए। अत: वे स्वतंत्रता के लिए कोई भी आहुति देने के लिए तत्पर हो उठे।

इस तरह भारतीय समाज के सभी वर्ग अंग्रेज़ी सरकार की नीतियां से पीड़ित थे। अत: उन्होंने स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के लिए राष्ट्रवादी आन्दोलन आरंभ कर दिया।

 

How did the First World War contribute to the development of the movement in India?

While the First World War caused destruction to humanity, it also gave a boost to nationalism. The contribution of the First World War in the development of the national movement in India is described as follows- 

 

1. Increase in taxes --  Due to the First World War, the defense expenditure suddenly increased. To meet this expenditure, the government increased taxes. In addition, customs duty was also increased. A new tax was also imposed in the form of income tax. This caused public anger which gave rise to nationalism.

2. Increase in Prices --  During the First World War there was a severe shortage of food items. As a result the prices almost doubled. The life of the common man became painful. So people started thinking about freedom from foreign rule. This thinking became the basis of the national movement.

3. Forced Recruitment of Soldiers -- The government needed more and more soldiers because of the excessive casualties in the First World War. Therefore, the youth from the villages were forcibly recruited into the army. This caused a special resentment towards the government in rural areas.

4. Fury among Indian industrialists -- Now foreign capital started investing in India on a large scale. Indian industrialists wanted the government to impose heavy customs duty on imports and provide security to Indian industries by providing them facilities. Now they also began to realize that the goals of security can be achieved only through a firm nationalist movement and an independent Indian government. 

5. Fury among workers and artisans -- Workers and artisans suffering from unemployment and inflation also became active in the national movement. It was also difficult for them to survive. They started thinking that if you want to die of hunger then why not die under the shadow of the indigenous government. So they were ready to make any sacrifice for freedom.

In this way all sections of the Indian society were suffering from the policies of the British government. Therefore, he started the nationalist movement for independence.
