पॉलीथीन मानव द्वारा तैयार रासाथनिक पदार्थों का वह अपशिष्ट रूप है जो अजैव निम्नीकरणीय है और इसे प्राकृतिक कारकों क द्वारा हानि रहित पदार्थों में पुनः नहीं बदला जा सकता। यह जीवाणुओं के द्वारा अपघटित नहीं होता। इसे मिट्टी में दबाने, जल में ढुढते, धूप-छाया में रखने से भी अपघटित नहीं किया जा सकता इसलिए प्रकृति पर इसका कुप्रभाव पढ़ता है। यह जल प्रवाह को अवरुद्ध करने और बाढ़ लाने का कारण भी बनते हैं। अत: आवश्यक है कि इस पर प्रतिबंध लगाया जाए।

Polythene is that waste form of chemical substances produced by humans which is non-biodegradable and cannot be re-converted into harmless substances by natural factors. It is not decomposed by bacteria. It cannot be decomposed even by pressing it in the soil, moving in water, keeping it in the sun-shade, hence it reads its ill-effects on nature. They also block the flow of water and cause flooding. So it is necessary to ban it.
